Ground source heat pump systems (GSHPs), also known as geothermal heat pumps, are one of the most efficient and environmentally-friendly ways of providing heating and cooling for buildings. GSHPs work by extracting heat from the ground through a series of loops buried underground.
The loops are filled with a refrigerant fluid that absorbs heat from the ground and transports it to the heat pump. The heat pump itself operates similarly to a refrigerator, but in reverse. The heat pump compresses the fluid to increase its temperature and then transfers the heat to the buildinng's heating system. In the summer, this pro- cess is reversed to provide cooling.
